December 02, 2022

I watch a lot of college basketball, but mostly teams with small point guards since I’m considered a Sub-Six point guard. I love watching other 5-foot-something guards with big hearts prove they can play at the highest levels. These 10 “undersized” D1 point guards are my personal favorites to watch going into December 2022, in no particular order.

RJ Davis, North Carolina (5’11”): – I am a big UNC and RJ Davis fan. While UNC isn’t doing so hot going into December, RJ is consistently playing well as one of the team’s leaders. If you have watched UNC at all, you can clearly see that he is always one of the best players on the floor. At the time I am writing this, his numbers are proof that he is one of the top PG’s in D1 basketball, averaging 15.4pts, 5.0reb, 2.8ast, 40.3% FG.

Markquis Nowell, Kansas State (5’8″): I’ve been a huge fan of “Mr. New York City” since I first saw him play for Kansas State during the 2021-22 season. Markquis Nowell is proof that playing with heart is more valuable than being tall. The guy has accomplished more at 5’8″ (my height) than majority of the so-called “big guards” in high-major college basketball. He was just named MVP of the 2022 Cayman Islands Classic over the Thanksgiving break, and is ranked #3 for Assists Per Game with 7.8apg , while also averaging 14.5pts and 2.5reb. Watching him play with so much confidence at the Power 5 level inspires me to bet on myself every time I step on the court.

Sahvir Wheeler, Kentucky (5’9″): I have been studying Sahvir Wheeler since his freshman year at UGA. Being a small guard in Georgia is tough because, you immediately get underestimated until you damage some poor guy’s ego. Sahvir made it a little easier for small guys like me to be taken seriously. He’s at Kentucky now and is ranked #6 in NCAA D1 for Assists Per Game (7.3), and #13 for Assist-Turnover Ratio (4.00). Bottom line is, Sahvir Wheeler is a great college point guard!

Jared Bynum, Providence (5’8″): I didn’t know who Jared Bynum was until I saw him play in Providence’s 2022-23 season opener against Rider University. Jared caught my attention by playing with a ton of energy, dropping dimes to his teammates, and never backing down on defense. Just like all of the guards on this list, Bynum can flat out hoop! Currently averaging 10.0pts, 5.2ast, and 2.0reb per game for the Fryers, Jared definitely has a new fan here.

Terrell Burden, Kennesaw State (5’10”): This one is personal for me, for two reasons: (1) he’s a fellow Cobb County, GA native, and (2) I live in Kennesaw and have seen him play in person many times. Watching Terrell Burden play is always beautiful because he dominates every game on both defense and offense. I have also spent time talking to him, and he’s always been super nice and encouraging to me. Because he’s at a small mid-major school, he gets overlooked, but I will tell you he is one of the best PG’s in D1 college basketball. As of today, Terrell Burden averages 12ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.3 apg, and shoots 50% from the field.

Bowen Born, Northern Iowa (5’11”): I learned about Bowen Born from my dad who bought me Bowen’s training workout, and it’s tough! I see why he shoots 45% from the field and is currently the #8 scorer in NCAA D1 basketball with 21.7ppg. Bowen was named 2021 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Freshman of the Year, and then after being sidelined for half his sophomore season, he came back and was selected 2022 MVC Sixth Man of the Year. Really, Bowen is a SG trapped in a PG’s body, which explains his low assists average of 2.9apg. But he’s still a lot of fun to watch.

Darius McGhee, Liberty University (5’8″): Darius McGhee is another A-SUN Conference guard I had to put on this list. He’s the #13 scorer in NCAA D1 basketball with 21.2ppg (45% FG) and has over 2,000 points so far in his college career. I’ve seen him battle against Terrell Burden of Kennesaw State in person, and I can tell you that Darius is a bucket! He currently has 35 threes and holds the #1 spot for 3PT FG Made in NCAA D1. Thanks to Darius, Liberty is moving to Conference USA next season. Only thing is, he won’t be there because he’s a senior.

Nick Honor, Missouri (5’10”): Right now, Nick Honor is ranked #6 for Assist-Turnover Ratio (5.2). I saw him play for the first time over the 2022 Thanksgiving break against Coastal Carolina and really liked his toughness on defense and offense. He took good care of the ball and didn’t have any turnovers, plus knocked down a few threes and rebounded the ball well. I’m still learning about him, but he’s definitely a guy I am going to be watching all season.

Kendric Davis, Memphis (5’11”): I actually just learned about Kendric Davis over Thanksgiving break when Memphis played Seton Hall at the Phil Knight Invitational. Dude had 22pts, 7reb, 6ast in that game and I was like “Wow!” Right now, he is tied for 37th in Points Per Game and holds the #38 spot for Assists Per Game, with averages of 19.5pts, 4.0reb, and 5.5ast per game. I will be watching Kendric a lot more this winter.

Jalen Benjamin, Mount St. Mary’s (5’10”): Jalen Benjamin is a sleeper at Mount St. Mary’s, averaging 17.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, and he’s tied at #32 overall for Assists Per Game. Like me, Jalen Benjamin is a metro-Atlanta basketball recruit under six-feet tall, so that’s a really good reason for me to like him more. My only issue with him is he recently tried to deny that he’s under 6-feet tall in a Mount St. Mary’s promo video on YouTube.
