Working for Shaq on his podcast has been a dream come true! I am meeting so many of my favorite athletes, comedians, and actors. This week I met Lou Williams (3x NBA 6th Man) and legendary comedian/actor, Bill Bellamy. I had so much fun laughing and learning about the NBA and comedy.
WHAT I LEARNED: As a floor general and point guard, I have always viewed myself as the ultimate leader on my team. Whether I was starting, or the first guard off the bench, I always saw myself as a leader. But I never saw myself as a 6th man because, I never saw that role as being a leader. But, Lou Williams changed my perspective.
After watching Lou Will break down how he embraced being the first guy off the bench for whatever NBA team he was on, I realized my viewpoint had to change. As the 6th man, you are the coach’s most dependable guy on the bench. For a point guard like me, this means I am the leader of my team’s second unit, as well as the go to leader when the starting PG subs out.
Lou said that coming off the bench was not something he ever dreamed of as a kid growing up in Atlanta. But, he realized that he could make a long NBA career out of being the 6th man. As a result, he became the only player in NBA history, besides Jamal Crawford, to win the 6th Man of the Year award 3 times.
